How Does a Ductless System Operate?

As we mentioned above, ductless mini splits are similar to heat pumps. However, rather than using ductwork to distribute air, they utilize individual air handlers which are installed in different areas of your living space that need climate control. A single outdoor unit can usually support up to four indoor air handlers, and each of these air handlers has its own thermostat, allowing for zoned cooling and heating.

As with other heat pumps, ductless heating and air conditioning systems function by evaporating and condensing refrigerant to transfer heat from one area to another. When in cooling mode, each air handler evaporates refrigerant to absorb heat from inside their respective room. The refrigerant gas is then sent outside, where it’s condensed into liquid again to release the collected heat outside of the home. In heating mode, the opposite happens, with heat being collected from the air outside and released into the home.
